Our History

The Saratoga Healthy Transportation Network, SHTN, was developed in 2005 as a means of organizing the local efforts of many who share the common goal of creating a pedestrian and cycling friendly community.

We are volunteers who strive to improve Saratoga County residents' quality of life by promoting and building support for bike lanes, paths, and traffic calmed streets that connect neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces in Saratoga and surrounding towns and communities. We encourage more people to safely use non-motorized means of transportation by emphasizing the health, environmental, economic and societal benefits associated with this lifestyle. We also strive to educate the general public about the rights and responsibilities of both motorists and cyclists.

Our Mission

The Saratoga Healthy Transportation Network is dedicated to encouraging multi-modal transportation by fostering more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly conditions and by helping establish a safe environment for all modes of transportation for residents of and visitors to Saratoga Springs, NY and adjoining communities

Our Objectives

Many of the problems facing Saratoga today, such as parking limitations and congestion on major roads can be relieved with successful implementation of the objectives of the Saratoga Healthy Transportation Network. Some key objectives include:

  • Triple the amount of bike parking by the year 2010 – currently there are 15 bike racks, all close to downtown
  • Provide a safe and comfortable environment for people who would like to ride or walk instead of drive
  • Help create the Palmerton Ridge Trail that connects Saratoga Springs to Moreau State Park
  • Double the amount of businesses participating in the Bicycle Benefits program
  • Identify and establish safe routes to school (when possible) for all schools within the Saratoga Springs School District
  • Encourage cyclist/pedestrian minded planning
  • Promote local businesses
  • Endorse bicycle workplace commuting by creating local bicycle commuter programs
  • See more people out walking, running and cycling!
