Safe Routes to Schools
Safe Routes to School programs enable community leaders, schools and parents to improve safety and encourage more children to safely walk and bike to school. In the process, programs are working to reduce traffic congestion and improve health and the environment, making communities more livable for everyone. SHTN's Work on Safe Routes to Schools
2009 was an important year for raising awareness about the health, environmental, behavioral, and community benefits of promoting walking and biking to our schools! SHTN's ongoing work includes:
- Encouraging the Saratoga Springs Board of Education to develop and implement policies encouraging biking and walking to school
- Organizing walk and bike to school days
- Supporting Saratoga Springs District to promote safe riding and walking practices
- Actively facilitating a dialogue among the School District, city, and town officials to proactively create conditions that allow our children to choose safe, healthy transportation alternatives
Saratoga Springs Board of Education Allows Biking Under Restricted Conditions
The BOE now permits the "safe riding of bicycles on school property" (see revised policy 482.3). SHTN was pleased in concept with this reversal but has some concerns over restrictions and how the policy will be implemented. We continue to work with the School District to actively encourage biking and walking and to help individual schools improve conditions for doing so.
